Marco Goldsmith was born in Port Fairy, a small fishing town in Victoria,
in 1959. He was named for his great-grandfather, who was born on, and
shipwrecked with, the sailing ship Marco Polo during a crossing from
Scotland to Australia in 1885.
Life in a fishing town is not much fun for anyone, so young Marco turned
to music to escape. He started playing harmonica with a friend who played
guitar, but soon decided to take up guitar himself. He didn't study formally,
preferring instead to simply practice by himself, trying to emulate the
styles of the likes of B. B. King, Freddie King, Johnny Winter, and Eric
Clapton.
Working in a factory by day to support his young family, and playing the
blues by night, taught Marco to write songs about his life and his feelings,
a skill that is all too rare. Deciding his life lay in his music, Marco quit
the factory job and went on to form Marco Goldsmith's Blue Heat.
In January 1997, the stress of keeping a seven-piece band alive began to
show, and the members of Marco Goldsmith's Blue Heat voted to change the
name of the band simply to Blue Heat. Unfortunately, this did not appear
to help, and the band members soon went separate ways. In May 1997, one
of the finest R&B bands in Australia breathed its last at a memorable night
supporting B.B. King.
Marco is continuing his career as a solo guitarist/vocalist/songwriter.
